If the public begins believing that serious ethical questions involving high-ranking officials can be dismissed through political alliances rather than answered through accountability, future officeholders may conclude that ethics are negotiable.
Political responsibility cannot be selectively applied. One cannot claim credit for electoral victories while disclaiming ownership of the administration's subsequent controversies. That sounds more like opportunism than accountability.
